Pier64: The belly is happier than the bank

On the 16th of June 2013 the family and I went to Pier64, a steakhouse, to celebrate Father’s Day. Pier64 is located in Penarth marina – a lovely setting made better by the lovely weather.

With Francis Dupuy (formerly of Le Gallois) at the helm I had high expectations. My expectations were elevated even further when I saw the prices for some of the dishes!

The menu has a good variety of fish, salads and meats and with us celebrating Father’s Day, I opted for the Chateaubriand, reasonably priced at £49.95 (between 2). The quality of the meat was excellent and cooked to perfection (rare), as were the vegetables, cooked al dente, and the rich dauphinoise potatoes worked well with such a lean meat. The red wine jus was beautifully flavoursome.

The meal was excellent and I enjoyed every element. The price is the only thing that would make me think twice before returning. The Chateaubriand is reasonable enough but with every other component: buttered greens £3; dauphinoise potatoes £3; foie gras £7.95; and red wine jus £2, I was parting with £41 for a main course – not to mention wine, water or dessert!

It’s worth noting that cheaper meals are available and they also offer a set lunch menu which is very reasonable. 2 courses for £12.95 and 3 courses for a mere £15.95.

It wasn’t me paying so I happily ordered the chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream, (£5.95) for dessert. This was perfect. Light sponge yielding under my spoon giving way to velvety chocolate. This, along with the ice cream provided a perfect end to the meal – and without being overly sweet either.

With Côtes du Rhône 100% Grenache Julien Mus (£24.95) and a double espresso for £3.75 it would have been cheaper for me to have eaten at Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester – and they have 3 Michelin stars!

Despite the cost, Pier64 is an excellent steakhouse cooking top notch food. I’m looking forward to going again though I’ll most probably order something cheaper.

Pier 64: Y bola yn hapusach na’r banc

Ar yr 16eg o Fehefin 2013 es i mas gyda’r teulu i Pier64 am ginio i ddathlu Sul Y Tadau. Bwyty, bar a thŷ stecen ydyw, lawr ym marina Penarth - lleoliad delfrydol o ystyried y tywydd braf cawsom ni.

@l0mbard0

Gyda Francis Dupuy (yn gynt o Le Gallois) wrth y llyw mi oeddwn i’n disgwyl bwyd o safon uchel. Cynyddodd y disgwyliad eto wedi i mi weld prisiau rhai o’r prydau!

Ar ôl diod wrth y bar ces i gyfle i edrych ar y fwydlen. Roedd yna ddigon o amrywiaeth gyda physgod, saladau a chigach.

Gyda ni’n dathlu Sul Y Tadau, a Pier 64 yn dŷ stecen, ces i’r Chateaubriand am bris digon rhesymol o £49.95 (rhwng 2). Mi oedd ansawdd y cig yn wych ac roedd wedi’i goginio’n berffaith (gwaedlyd). Mi oedd y llysiau’n wych hefyd: llysiau gwyrdd al dente; tatws dauphinoise cyfoethog, yn gweithio’n dda gyda chig â chyn lleied o fraster; a saws gwin coch yn berffaith gyda’r Chateaubriand.

Mi oedd y pryd yn wych ac fe fwynheuais i pob un elfen. Y gost yw’r unig beth sydd yn gwneud i mi feddwl ddwy waith cyn dychwelyd. Mi oedd y Chateaubriand yn rhesymol ond gyda phopeth arall: llysiau gwyrdd â menyn £3; tatws dauphinoise £3; foie gras £7.95; a saws gwin coch £2, dwi’n talu £41 am brif gwrs, heb sôn am win, dŵr na phwdin!

Mae’n werth nodi bod prydau eraill ar gael sydd llawer rhatach ac hefyd bod yna fwydlen sy’n benodol at amser cinio sy’n cynnig 2 gwrs am £12.95 a 3 chwrs am £15.95.

Nid y fi oedd yn talu felly on i’n mwy na hapus dewis ffondant siocled gydag hufen iâ fanila (£5.95) am bwdin. Mi oedd hwn yn berffaith. Sbwng yn ysgafn a gwead y siocled poeth melfedaidd yn llifo ar ôl i mi ei dorri. Gydag ychydig o’r hufen iâ roedd e’n ddiweddglo bendigedig i’r pryd – heb fod yn rhy felys chwaith.

Gyda gwin Côtes du Rhône 100% Grenache Julien Mus (£24.95) ac espresso dwbl am £3.75 mi fydde fe wedi bod yn rhatach i mi gael cinio ym mwyty Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester – ac mae 3 seren Michelin ‘da nhw!

Er gwaetha’r gost, mae Pier 64 yn fwyty arbennig o dda sy’n creu bwyd o ansawdd. Dwi’n edrych 'mlaen cael bwyta yno eto, ond bydda'i siwr o fod yn archebu prydau rhatach.
